Krav Maga Expert Eyal Yanilov Shows You How to Defend Against a Knife Attack on the Ground
Eyal Yanilov and his krav maga defenses against variations of the front kick were featured as the cover story for the March 2011 issue of Black Belt (which happened to be the third of five special 50th Anniversary issues leading up to the June 2011 50th Anniversary Collector’s Issue). In this exclusive martial arts video filmed during the photo session for that issue, the krav maga expert shows you how to defend against a knife attack from the ground position.

In this krav maga video, Yanilov is on his back on the ground and an attacker sits atop him, thrusting a knife. Yanilov blocks the downward knife attack, explaining, “At the same time [as we block], we are counterattacking,” as he thrusts a tiger-claw-style eye gouge into the assailant’s face.

“The attacker is usually recoiling,” Yanilov continues. “I don’t let him. … When I recoil, I use my hips to throw him to the side and continue to attack.” Yanilov demonstrates this hip action and counterattack by rolling the attacker onto his back and getting his fist right up into his face. He grabs the attacker’s knife arm and pins it on the ground, immobilizing the attacker’s weapon and supporting his own bodyweight in the process. Yanilov gets up on one knee and one foot to secure his ability to move quickly from the danger zone while still maintaining enough leverage to control the situation.

“The hook is being turned to grab with pressing on [the attacker’s] arm so it will be difficult for him to move the arm,” Yanilov explains. “All this time, you continue to strike. At this moment, you can choose to get away from the danger zone [or] disarm and get out.” The krav maga master then demonstrates how to get out of the situation, grabbing the opponent’s leg and flipping it swiftly to one side to open his own escape route. “The last thing you do [in this particular example],” Yanilov says, “is leave the knife and move away.”

One of the most respected krav maga practitioners in the world today, Eyal Yanilov is currently listed as “master level 3/expert level 8” in krav maga. This is the highest rank krav maga founder Imi Lichtenfeld ever awarded to any student. In 2010, Yanilov founded Krav Maga Global and serves as its chief instructor in a continued effort to spread real krav maga worldwide.

In the above video’s technique sequence, Eyal Yanilov is sitting on the ground when the aggressor approaches and begins his kick. “In the sitting position,” Eyal Yanilov explains, “[I will deflect] the kick when moving the body out from the area of the attack.”

The krav maga expert shifts to his left to evade the foot and simultaneously deflects the leg with his left arm. “We call it 200-percent defense,” Eyal Yanilov says. “One-hundred-percent efficiency with the hand, 100-percent efficiency with the body.”

Eyal Yanilov explains the final section of the krav maga technique: “As soon as I [can], I counterattack. The moment I [shift] my weight and there’s no weight on the legs, I [can] already function to kick with them.” Eyal Yanilov then falls onto his left side and unleashes side kicks to the man’s leg and body, which prompts him to explain, “From this position, I attack … and from this position, either I continue to attack or move away from the danger zone,” as he finishes his opponent and escapes.

Eyal Yanilov began his training in the Israeli art at age 14 under Eli Avikzar but then shifted to the legendary Imi Lichtenfeld, founder of the system. Eyal Yanilov so impressed the krav maga master that he became Imi Lichtenfeld’s assistant. His primary assignment was to commit the art’s principles and techniques to paper. The result was Krav Maga: How to Defend Yourself Against Armed Assault, co-written by Imi Lichtenfeld (as Imi Sde-Or) and Eyal Yanilov, which was published in 2001 — three years after the founder passed away.

Krav Maga Video by Alain Cohen: What Is Krav Maga Security’s Approach to Countering Kicks?

When Israeli officials want their soldiers to beef up their fighting skills, they send them to train in krav maga. For Israel’s elite law-enforcement officers, soldiers and bodyguards, however, their training option of choice is krav maga security — a reality-based, close-quarters-combat system founded by Alain Cohen.

Krav maga security is, of course, based on the Israeli martial art of krav maga. However, it takes the art in interesting directions — both mentally and physically — to make it especially appealing to security professionals.

But is krav maga effective in situations involving kicks?

In this exclusive krav maga video excerpt from his comprehensive six-DVD set Krav Maga Personal Protection: The Israeli Method of Close-Quarters Combat, Cohen presents options for handling a kick.

A hallmark of reality-based fighting is an emphasis on a smaller set of techniques, and krav maga security maintains that tradition. Alain Cohen believes that a “less is more” approach yields two benefits:

1. It prevents the freeze that can occur when a martial artist must choose just the krav maga technique from the hundreds (or even thousands) that he may know, and …

2. It enables him to focus practice time on each of the fewer krav maga techniques.

Through using this “less is more” approach, Alain Cohen says that “the student can better assimilate the essential principles in less time.”

Ideas such as this have evidently worked for Alain Cohen. His krav maga security training program is taught in the United States, France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Poland, Denmark and Belgium in addition to Israel, where he’s based.

How to Use Krav Maga for Self-Defense Against a Shirt Grab!

Would you know what to do if an attacker grabbed your shirt in a bar, at an ATM or on the street? Krav maga expert Alain Cohen shows you a simple yet fiercely effective krav maga counterattack for exactly this situation in this excerpt from his six-DVD krav maga set, Krav Maga Personal Protection: The Israeli Method of Close-Quarters Combat!

This simple yet effective krav maga counterattack to shirt grabs involves a joint lock and gross-motor pressure-point manipulation to take down an attacker quickly and decisively in a one-two movement!

The key to this krav maga technique is in making the attacker’s body part of yours. As Alain Cohen explains, “When he’s grabbing me, I have to make his fist a part of my body. And if my body will turn, all his arm will turn.” The one-two movement is described as a press-down on the attacker’s grabbing hand with a slight forward press with the shoulder, followed by the abrupt turn of the whole body to effectively force the attacker into a submissive position, taking him down to a more manageable place for strikes, joint locks such as elbow locks, wrist locks or other vital-target counterattacks.

A slight variant of this technique involves just the body turn, which disrupts the attacker’s alignment and opens him up for the forward press with your shoulder. This acts as a blunt pressing force against his wrist, his arm and his shoulder in their weakened positions and brings the attacker to the ground.
