History was made just a few months ago when Ilia Topuria became the first-ever UFC champion representing both Spain and Georgia.

The moment came at UFC 298, where Topuria secured a sensational second-round knockout over featherweight legend Alexander Volkanovski to claim the title. Now, as the reigning champion, Topuria faces his biggest test yet—a title defense against former champion Max Holloway in the main event of UFC 308 on October 26, 2024, at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.

Topuria’s Meteoric Rise to Champion Status

Ilia Topuria made his UFC debut in 2020, quickly gaining attention with his well-rounded skills and fearless approach. A short-notice fight against Youssef Zalal in Abu Dhabi marked the start of his UFC journey, and "El Matador" didn’t disappoint. He claimed victory via unanimous decision, putting the featherweight division on notice.

From there, Topuria’s trajectory only skyrocketed. He followed up with a devastating first-round knockout over Damon Jackson, and then in 2021, he added another first-round KO to his resume by finishing Ryan Hall at UFC 264. His dominant performances earned him a reputation as a fearsome knockout artist.

His first true moment of adversity came in a lightweight bout against Jai Herbert in 2022. Despite being dropped by a head kick early in the fight, Topuria displayed his warrior spirit, coming back to knock Herbert out in the second round. He later returned to the featherweight division and solidified his contender status with a submission win over Bryce Mitchell and a one-sided decision victory over Josh Emmett in his first UFC main event.

The Night History Was Made

Following his win against Emmett, Topuria made his intentions clear—he wanted a shot at the featherweight throne. And at UFC 298, his wish was granted. Facing Alexander Volkanovski, who had reigned as featherweight champion since 2019, Topuria knew the challenge ahead was monumental. However, the Georgian-Spanish fighter brought his trademark power and precision, dropping Volkanovski with a thunderous right hand in the second round to become the new featherweight champion.

The victory not only crowned Topuria as the king of the 145-pound division but also marked a historic moment for Spain and Georgia, as he became the first UFC champion from both nations.

The Champion’s First Title Defense: Max Holloway Awaits

Now, as he prepares for his first title defense at UFC 308, Topuria faces none other than Max Holloway, one of the greatest featherweights in UFC history. Holloway, a former champion, has been a perennial contender in the division and is known for his toughness, striking volume, and cardio.

Topuria’s power and precision will be put to the ultimate test against Holloway, who has only lost to the very best in the sport. Can "El Matador" continue his unbeaten streak and solidify his legacy as the new featherweight king? Or will Holloway reclaim the title and once again sit atop the featherweight mountain?

Don’t Miss UFC 308: Topuria vs. Holloway

The UFC 308 main event promises fireworks, as Ilia Topuria looks to defend his featherweight title against the ever-dangerous Max Holloway. Will the rising star from Spain and Georgia continue his reign, or will the former champion reclaim his throne? Tune in live from Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi on October 26, 2024.
