As the lights of Las Vegas set the stage for UFC 300, Cody Garbrandt steps into the ring not just to fight but to prove a point—living in the moment can pave the way to victory. This Saturday, Garbrandt faces Deiveson Figueiredo, a notable flyweight turned bantamweight contender, in a match that's much more than just another bout; it's a testament to Garbrandt's journey back to his roots.

Reflecting on his recent success, including a knockout victory over Brian Kelleher, Cody feels a sense of déjà vu, reminiscent of his 2016 triumphs. “There are definitely little glimpses of that time,” he shares. Cody's return to the bantamweight division marks a full circle, focusing on consistency, health, and the basic tenets that once catapulted him to the championship.

2016 was a remarkable year for Cody, marked by victories that led to his bantamweight title win against Dominick Cruz—a performance still celebrated for its mastery. However, the following years were challenging, marred by losses and injuries. Last year, Cody decided to strip back to basics, a move that has reinvigorated his career. “I thrive in simplicity,” Cody admits. "Sticking to the basics, maintaining a hard work ethic, and enduring the daily grind sets me apart."

This philosophy of simplicity and focus has clearly paid off with wins over Trevin Jones and Kelleher. Cody acknowledges the ebb and flow of life and training, embracing the unpredictable as part of his strategy. Missed practices or unexpected setbacks are no longer setbacks but opportunities to return stronger. "It's about controlling what I can and letting go of what I can't," he explains.

As he prepares for his bout against Figueiredo, Cody's excitement is palpable. They were slated to clash previously at the flyweight level, and now that Figueiredo has moved up, Cody sees this as a perfect opportunity to showcase his refined skills and prove his mettle. “I love the matchup,” he says enthusiastically. “It’s a chance to demonstrate there are levels to this game, and I'm excited to show that I can compete with the best.”

Cody Garbrandt at 32, remains a formidable force in the UFC, driven by a philosophy that simplicity and focus are the keys to success. As UFC 300 unfolds, he's not just fighting for a win but for a philosophy that looks to define his legacy in the world of mixed martial arts.
