Ariel Torres, who recently claimed the United States' first Olympic medal in Karate with a bronze in Tokyo, has won his second consecutive Pan American Championship. Torres spent the years leading up to the pandemic dominating the North American Sport Karate Association (NASKA) world tour representing Team Revolution. After winning every major title in open sport karate competition including the AKA Warrior Cup, ISKA U.S. Open, and the Diamond Nationals, Torres has almost entirely shifted his focus to the World Karate Federation (WKF).

Joining Torres on the medal stand at the Pan American Championships in Uruguay was fellow American karateka Gakuji Tozaki, who claimed silver. Tozaki and Torres currently hold the 9th and 11th positions in the WKF male kata rankings, making them the highest-ranking Americans in the world.

Two-Time Black Belt Hall of Famer Hayward Nishioka has been campaigning for judo in the United States to harvest more shodans (1st degree black belts) Shodan literally means student. It's analogous to being a freshman in college. It's not the end but the beginning according to Jigoro Kano, the Founder of Judo.

Yokozuna Terunofuji wrapped up the year with back-to-back titles, including the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament in Fukuoka.

After clinching his sixth Emperor's Cup championship Saturday at the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament, Terunofuji finished with another win on Sunday to go a perfect 15-0 for the event, the first time he's ever gone unbeaten in a tournament. Terunofuji defeated Takakeisho in a hard fought battle pushing his foe out of the ring to cap a remarkable year that saw him continue a come back from career-threatening injuries to win four out of six tournaments and secure a promotion to yokozuna, the sport's highest rank.
