Black Belt contributing writer Lori Hoeck started her martial arts training in 1981 and holds a second-degree black belt in tang soo do and a third-degree black belt in taekwondo. Hoeck first taught tang soo do through the Colorado Mountain College in the late ’80s. In recent years, she's served as a senior martial arts instructor in southern Colorado.

A freelance writer and photographer, Hoeck was a reporter and columnist for her local paper and has been published in national magazines. Using her martial arts knowledge and her emergency services background as a volunteer firefighter and EMT, Hoeck now writes about physical, mental and emotional self-defense on her blog Think Like a Black Belt. To help non-martial artist discover proactive self-defense skills and teach them to their children, she recently released an e-book Think Like a Black Belt: Take Charge of Your Own Saftey.
